Quality is at the heart of everything that we do

The books we publish – whether they're open access or not – go through the same rigorous peer review process. We use a single blind review process for all proposal and manuscript reviews, and follow best practice to ensure anonymity of reviewers and the independence of reviews.

Here is an outline of the process that we follow:

  • Step 1: The author submits their proposal including sample material and CV to the appropriate editor.

  • Step 2: The editor assesses the proposals to determine if the project is a good fit for our publishing programme.

  • Step 3: If the Emerald editor decides to pursue the project, they will send the proposal and accompanying material to qualified scholars in the relevant field of research for peer review.

  • Step 4: When the review is complete, the editor will send a copy of the report to the author and request a formal response.  Please note, the identities of the reviewers will be withheld.

  • Step 5: The Emerald editor presents the final book proposal to our Editorial Board for approval to publish.

We reserve the right to reject proposals at any stage in the process. In the case of a negative review, we may invite a response from the author and/or solicit a further review from another scholar to verify the comments of the first reviewer. If extensive changes are suggested, we may ask the author to revise and resubmit the proposal. We may also commission a final full manuscript review (ideally from our proposal reviewer) when the manuscript is complete, before the book goes into production.
